about

Written to be sung from under a balcony, perhaps, or when someone needs a lover, or maybe even just a friend, it's a simple song for a simple feeling and a simple offer. I wrote this for my partner Anna, while we were both going through a lot of hell.

It's also the only slow song on Dick Tracy Must Die. I don't write many of those, and this isn't the only one, but it's the only one on this album.

lyrics

When you're alone and you
Think you can't see me and you're
Sure that you're somewhere deeply lost that
No one can find, and you
Don't have a lead you can
Try to grab onto just a
little shaky feeling that you've
been left behind, well I
Hope that you know that I'll
Always be with you even
If I'm not standing in the
dark by your side, and I
Hope that you know that I
Always will answer if you
Call from the distance I will
Come be your guide

Have you ever known what I
see when I see you in the
days and the nights when I
lie by your side? Do you
know how it feels when I
reach out to touch you or I
lean up against you in the
train as we ride? Have you
learned what it means just to
know that I sense you in the
near and the far and the
points in between? Can you
feel how it cools all my
pains just to touch you? Do the
joys that I have always
remain unseen?

So when you're at odds and have
nothing remaining and you
Need someone there who can
aim you to land, and you
Want someone then who will
back you against winds that would
crack, whip, and snap, lashing
cruel with demands, well I
hope that you know that I'll
be here to hold you, and I
hope you'll accede when I
offer my hand, and I
hope that you know when I
ask that I love you, and you'll
know that I'll give
everything that I am

When you're alone and you
Think you can't see me and you're
Sure that you're somewhere deeply lost that
No one can find, and you
Don't have a hand you can
Try to hold onto just a
little shaky feeling that you've
been left behind, well I
Hope that you know that I'll
Always be with you even
If I'm not standing in the
dark by your side, and I
Hope that you know that I
Always will answer if you
Call from the distance I will
Come be your guide
