about

I've had some really strange relationships. Strange doesn't mean bad; just ... strange. One of them prompted me to write this song, the first song I ever wrote for a chorded instrument, back in 2008. Until then, I'd only written instrumentals, and not a lot of those. It's about both self-discovery and discovery of self by others, and whether that means more than you really want it to, or can even guess at.

Or, as Facebook oversimplifies it, "it's complicated." Boy howdy is it complicated.

The extended ending is actually taken from one of those instrumental pieces I used to write, one called "The World Falls Down." The rest of that song might appear on an instrumental album I have in mind, called "Distractions."

lyrics

It's not what I imagined
Not a thing I'd think could be
Do you guess what you are really
That there's more that you should know?
You're not so much the elder
As you think you are to me, and
The shaping that has made you
Still has further yet to go

Chorus:
Do you know what I've been thinking
Can you make out what you see?
Do you hear the fluted whispers
Do you not remember me?
Do you wake in early hours
fading stars and thoughts a-blur?
I thought you knew
who I knew you were

It wasn't my intention
So I didn't have a plan
But a smile I gifted to you
Turned to em'rald in your eyes
I've felt this thing before, I thought, but
never with a man
And what you have I've needed
though it still lives in disguise

(Chorus)

I don't know what you're saying
even though I always do
There's someone else besides you
that much even I can tell
Your words are made of crystal
but there's no way to see through
I puzzle at the gleanings
staring deep into the vale

(Chorus)

Flecks and pieces in a mirror
Scattered here and never where
I know what I am hoping
but you don't know what to do
Desperation is a trueness,
crystals flying through the air;
What I am is who I must
could that apply to you?

(Bridge)

So I'll keep on standing
You will be the time you need
I'll not pretend you'll meet me when
we've two and separate ways
But please I beg do not let go
the promises you've made
I'll light your trail with stardust
if you hold on through your days

Will you answer me?
