about

The first full-length full-band studio album by CRIME and the Forces of Evil, this concept album tells a story of supervillainy in bits and pieces, whispers and fragments, rumours and songs. Can you find its heart?

credits

released 03 March 2011
Everything on this album is by Dara Korra'ti/CRIME and the Forces of Evil, off live instruments, with the arguable exception of the organ, which has a real keyboard, but an electric organ. We don't have anything against synth and MIDI, we just don't have a proper keyboard player. ^_^

We built our microstudio with financial help from our sponsors, who we would like to thank here: Deborah Hooker, Diego R. Martinez, Maria-Katriina Lehtinen, Elane S. D. Imgoven, Barbara Cathyl, and Silussa. We'd also like to thank our Kickstarter project backers for backing our duplication project, including but not limited to: Marshall McGowan, Sarah Kaye, Deb, Sunnie Larsen, Blimix, Regis M. Donovan, and Pudding Cannon Studios.

We also send personal thanks to Alexander James Adams, who said, "Dara, you really need to do this," and meant it; Russ Birch, for support and critical advice; Batya for being First Fan; Cathy Fiorello, Angela Korra'ti, and Kathryn Tewson for listening to too. many. rough. cuts., and Quen and Cow for moral support. We'd also like to thank John at panicStudios for pointing us at Mark Guenther as a mastering engineer when construction activity near panicStudios forced him to bow out of the project.

All songs recorded and engineered by Solarbird the Lightbringer, a.k.a. Dara Korra'ti, of CRIME and the Forces of Evil, at Criminal Studios/Murkworks North, using Ardour on Ubuntu Studio. Album mastered by Mark Guenther at Seattle Disc Mastering, to whom we are particularly grateful for helping us get this into final form.

Track Name: Something's Coming (Live in the Lyons' Den)
Come to a show and FIND OUT! MUAH HA HA!
Track Name: Hide from Me
Chorus:
Where is your heaven and/who is your overlord?
What is your cover and/who has been protecting you?
Who are your teachers and/what are they showing you?
What do you swear upon and/who is it you want to be?
Where were you praying and/what were you dreaming of?
What is your vision and/who there has been guiding you?
Who are your heroes? how/do they inspire you?
What are you thinking? That you/hope that you can hide from me?

What for the love of heaven will you do, when they
Find all the answers being blocked to you, and
What are you seeking when you look inside the mirrors
Glaring their visions that you cannot see?

[Chorus]

Where in the depths of heaven will you lie when you
know all that righteous fury grants to you, and
Where will you burrow when you're told to buy every
blow bringing further victory into view?

[Chorus]

Who in the moment will you know to be, when the
Blood being lathered flies across your view, and
Who in the moment will you choose to be, when the
Flesh being rendered isn't part of you?

Isn't it easier
Holding your silence and
Wouldn't you rather just
Go along another day and
No one is asking but
Everyone's won'dring, will you
Put down that puzzle box and
Quietly just walk away?
Track Name: Outbirds
brenda and sugar and alex and jeff
remember they day that the rest of them left
william and honor and carrie and jean
certainly never meant anything mean

melting and running the snowflakes away
sooner or later when no one can say
circles that move along making their way
slowly forget about you

rosie and ethel and suzie and john
always the best until then they're gone
aaron and esteban; tiffn'y and karl
never did write and it's been quite a while

out-birds and flocking create quite a scene
never together and sometimes quite mean
but if you're useful we'll make quite a team
someday, or maybe, for now

jerry and joseph and thomas and me
eventually turned out was best left a three
amy and elsie and misty and boo
always had something else better to do

chasing them down along albany lane
sycamores waving as if they're to blame but you're
orbiting loosely, pherepheries high
jumping away yet again

bridge:
never quite touching through crystalline glassery
always the outbird will look rather lost
where are the others whose thoughts are so glittery
how can you sail along ever so tossed
knee-deep in comrades who briefly play friends with you
wondering what kind of creature they've found
looking askance at your faceted plumery
soon they're distracted by ones more their kin

charlotte and erika, jenny and kirk
quickly get tired of all of that work
terrence and maxwell and lisa and kyle
maybe they'll latch on, at least for a while

someday this dancing may seem quite routine
falling then catching then tossed off, unseen
outbirds still looking for others who share their sky
windswept away yet again...
Track Name: Artefacts (You'll Never See)
when you go into the hill town
find the places that they kept you,
where now everything is empty,
as if though it'd ever been --
and the buildings are like theatre
sets abandoned ever after,
everything leans just a little,
over roads three-quarter scale

chorus:
no one comes to give you letters
there's no money in a card --
no one offers explanations
to girls wandering the streets
when you find a yellowed paper
dated nineteen seventy
it's been sitting there forever
artefacts you'll never see

black obelisk stands guard before
the rusty green and metal bridge
whose creaking wooden roadway
never carried any cars
there's a long way 'round this river,
takes you through the city gate;
best be gone from here by dark,
you think, some thirty years too late

[chorus]

emptiness in every building
signs propped up against walls
some have windows boarded over
hiding nothing inside
and when on the midnights dreary
play iniquitous games, they cry
"each trial an act of love and trust"
amongst other claims

[bridge]

[chorus]

brick and concrete and a tower
carved in to a twisted house
fifty-seven stairs of climbing
hoping no one will see
'round the back where you can enter,
past machines left in rain,
metal walls reflect the camera's light
but nothing remains

[chorus]

sometimes when you are seeking explanations that're due
you'll find no one's left to meet you
Track Name: Cascadia (How I Have Missed You) (Instrumental)
there are no words
Track Name: Stars
Somewhere where you can find your freedom
Somewhere you can define your space
Somewhere where you can keep on going
Somewhere where you can make your case
Somewhere where all the chains are broken,
jumbled, freed from their interlace
Somewhere where you can start beginning,
nightmares fading without a trace in the
Stars

Have you heard of the thing I'm seeking? Or do you mock this pretentious bliss?
Do you recognise thoughts I'm sending? Have you sighted a place like this?
Glimmering silvery light I'm chasing, skating vertical icy cliff;
Have you seen any sign that's pointing some strange angle that shows the direction of
Stars?

Can you trust in the song you're hearing? Does it hint of a better way?
[[untranslated - see liner notes]]
...leading somewhere I think the direction of
Stars

Is it cheating to seek another
place and time less unlike your own?
Doesn't honour require standing
fighting even when all alone
Flying gives you another option
but is it one that you fear to take?
Freedom's calling if you'll just answer
look up dammit and see what you're missing!
Track Name: When You Leave
when you leave you better
keep on going
when you leave you better
run like hell
when you run you better
keep your footing
when you fly you better
know damn well that

someone's gonna be behind that mirror
something's hiding in the ringing bell
something's seeking you through every window
Something's tracking you with senses fell

when you run you better
know you mean it
when you run you better
say farewell
when you fly you better
watch your twenty
when you bolt you better
know damn well that

no one's list'ning to your best of reasons
no one wants to hear a thing you say
no one's giving you their second chances
don't pretend there won't be hell to pay

when you fly you better
keep your secrets
when you fly you better
never tell
when you bolt you better
leave no traces
when you leave you better
know damn well that

rage is never on the side of heaven
fury never has an upper bound
vengeance weans itself on indignation
better pray that you are never found

when you're gone you maybe
might discover
when you're gone you maybe
breathe again
when you're gone you maybe
float so freely
when you're gone you may think
now and then that

this time might just be the time to make it
this place might just be the place you keep
'till the horrors find you unforgotten
whispering tortures to you in your sleep

when you leave you better
keep on going
when you leave you better
run like hell
Track Name: Thought You Knew
It's not what I imagined
Not a thing I'd think could be
Do you guess what you are really
That there's more that you should know?
You're not so much the elder
As you think you are to me, and
The shaping that has made you
Still has further yet to go

Chorus:
Do you know what I've been thinking
Can you make out what you see?
Do you hear the fluted whispers
Do you not remember me?
Do you wake in early hours
fading stars and thoughts a-blur?
I thought you knew
who I knew you were

It wasn't my intention
So I didn't have a plan
But a smile I gifted to you
Turned to em'rald in your eyes
I've felt this thing before, I thought, but
never with a man
And what you have I've needed
though it still lives in disguise

(Chorus)

I don't know what you're saying
even though I always do
There's someone else besides you
that much even I can tell
Your words are made of crystal
but there's no way to see through
I puzzle at the gleanings
staring deep into the vale

(Chorus)

Flecks and pieces in a mirror
Scattered here and never where
I know what I am hoping
but you don't know what to do
Desperation is a trueness,
crystals flying through the air;
What I am is who I must
could that apply to you?

(Bridge)

So I'll keep on standing
You will be the time you need
I'll not pretend you'll meet me when
we've two and separate ways
But please I beg do not let go
the promises you've made
I'll light your trail with stardust
if you hold on through your days

Will you answer me?
Track Name: Let Me Help
When you're alone and you
Think you can't see me and you're
Sure that you're somewhere deeply lost that
No one can find, and you
Don't have a lead you can
Try to grab onto just a
little shaky feeling that you've
been left behind, well I
Hope that you know that I'll
Always be with you even
If I'm not standing in the
dark by your side, and I
Hope that you know that I
Always will answer if you
Call from the distance I will
Come be your guide

Have you ever known what I
see when I see you in the
days and the nights when I
lie by your side? Do you
know how it feels when I
reach out to touch you or I
lean up against you in the
train as we ride? Have you
learned what it means just to
know that I sense you in the
near and the far and the
points in between? Can you
feel how it cools all my
pains just to touch you? Do the
joys that I have always
remain unseen?

So when you're at odds and have
nothing remaining and you
Need someone there who can
aim you to land, and you
Want someone then who will
back you against winds that would
crack, whip, and snap, lashing
cruel with demands, well I
hope that you know that I'll
be here to hold you, and I
hope you'll accede when I
offer my hand, and I
hope that you know when I
ask that I love you, and you'll
know that I'll give
everything that I am

When you're alone and you
Think you can't see me and you're
Sure that you're somewhere deeply lost that
No one can find, and you
Don't have a hand you can
Try to hold onto just a
little shaky feeling that you've
been left behind, well I
Hope that you know that I'll
Always be with you even
If I'm not standing in the
dark by your side, and I
Hope that you know that I
Always will answer if you
Call from the distance I will
Come be your guide
Track Name: Stay Away
Stay Away
When you think that you want me
Stay away
When you know what you need
Stay away
When you have what I'm jonesing
Stay away
When you know what it's good for
Stay away
I see through your disguise

You may have what I'm needing
You may have my desires
You may hold all my comforts
You may calm all my tears

But I cling to my worries, holding onto my terrors
I adhere to my fighting, laying claim to my wars
I resist all my comforts, pouring songs out of terrors
I lay waste to my holdings, throwing stones at the sun
Stay Away

Stay away
I'm allergic to allies
Stay away
I'm aware of your spies
Stay away
I will cling to my horrors
Stay away
Sing me songs of betrayal
Stay away
I see through all your lies

You may bring me to laughter
Salving wounds with your nothings
You may undo my windings
Leaving me without pain

But I scrabble in tunnels, fleeing far from the morning
And I run from the evening, hiding deep in the night
I resist all the starlight, in a world without daybreak
Can I find any meaning in a world without pain?
Stay Away
Stay Away

[bridge]

You may cushion my achings
What would I be without them?
If you free me from bondage
Against what would I strain?

Have I fought here too long? Can I simply not leave it?
Am I chained here like stonework left to die in the rain?
In the depths of the well am I tied to the anger?
Do I crave all the torture that I can't leave behind?

Stay away
Though you have what I'm needing
Stay away
While I'm flayed to the bone
Stay away
Do you hear what I'm pleading?
Stay away
Don't pretend you're from home
Stay away

When I beg you to help me

When I'm aching for peace

When I'm drowning for rescue

When I need you the most
Track Name: Shout at the Desert
Is there an answer to find in this knowing?
Is there a secret to know in my bones?
Is there a question that I have to answer?

How will we look if we can't even know?
How will we go if we can't find the way?
How can you study a question so empty and
How can you fly if you can't even stay?

I know how to get there
but I don't know where I'm going
Is there somebody out there who can
give me a sign?
I call to the heavens and
I shout at the deserts and
I howl in the forests
am I wasting my time?

How will we see what we can't comprehend?
How will we learn what we can't even say?
How can you think knowing none of the factors, and
how can you learn if you can't even play?

Bolting about from one thing to another
I scrape for a sample that I can't ever find
Digging deep for water
wherever there's cactus
I hide in the shadows where I shelter my pride

I know how to get there
but I don't know where I'm going
Is there somebody out there who can
give me a sign?
I call to the heavens and
I shout at the deserts and
I howl in the forests
am I wasting am I wasting am I wasting ... am I am I am I am I?!

Is there an answer to find in this knowing?
Is there a secret to know in my bones?
Is there a question that I have to answer?

How will we draw when we don't know what we're seeing and
how can we seek when we're so far astray?
How can we follow from this fraction of a story and
how can we belong knowing nothing of our way?

I know how to get there but
I don't know where I'm going is there
somebody out there helping stars to align?
I call to the heavens and
I shout at the deserts and
I howl in the forests
where the hell are my kind?!

Is there an answer to find in this knowing?
Is there a secret to know in my bones?
Track Name: My Boyfriend (spoken intro)
So how many of you know what Sailor Moon is? Okay! So! Huge show if you were a girl in the 90s, told the story of the sailor senshii, superhero incarnations of the planets, defending the solar system against threats both extrasolar and extradimensional. A US company bought the rights to the first two series, dubbed 'em, aired them in North America, and it's a huge hit. So they want more of that, buy the next two series sight unseen and immediately realise they have a problem, or more correctly, two problems.

FIRST: one of the villains is gay. It's not subtext; it's a plot point. But being drawn in the fine tradition of bishonen, he's pretty. VERY pretty. So they look at him and think, "you know... with some edits... and recasting... and new dialogue... we could make him... a her." And they do. I understand it still airs this way, in English, but I don't care, I watch Japanese.

But then they have a SECOND problem. We meet three new sailor senshii: Sailors Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. Uranus and Neptune, both women, are a couple. It's not subtext. And it's time to play everybody's favourite game: LET'S HIDE THE LESBIANS! They look at Sailor Neptune... and go oh god, and so they look at Sailor Uranus and think, "Weeellll... she's pretty butch... she's a race car driver in real life... and she's got short hair and wears pants all the time... maybe we could make her... a him." I'm told that this actually made it out into the wild before - and I PRAY this is true - someone rang them up them going, "youuuuuu IDIOTS. Do you not know - because your audience certainly knows - that those uniforms they transform into to fight crime in are GIRL'S SCHOOL UNIFORMS and YOU have just invented the WORLD'S FIRST TRANSVESTITE SUPERHERO?"

This is about THAT Sailor Uranus, sung by THAT Sailor Neptune, and it's called, "My Boyfriend."

My BOYFRIEND wears a B-CUP
So what the hell is up with that?
My BOYFRIEND wears a B-CUP
It's not because he's really fat

My BOYFRIEND
My BOYFRIEND
My BOYFRIEND
My BOYFRIEND

He got an ass I would kill for
His legs go up into the sky
His hair gets him hassled out/side the shops
But underneath his pants he's a guy

My BOYFRIEND
My BOYFRIEND
My BOYFRIEND
My BOYFRIEND

The shoulders of a supermodel
That probably explains a lot
I've got bigger tits than he'll ever have
He's not the only one here who's hot

I mean, I do kinda wonder sometimes
It's not like I don't trust him and all
But I've never had a boyfriend like him before
And his cock is all smooth and hard like plastic, it's kinda weird

My BOYFRIEND
My BOYFRIEND
My BOYFRIEND
My BOYFRIEND

My BOYFRIEND wears a B-CUP
I really like him built like that!
My BOYFRIEND wears a B-CUP
And ...wait.

...does this mean I'm a lesbian?

Nah, that can't be right, 'cause
I've got a boyfriend!

I'm so confused.
Honestly.
What is going oooooooooon?!
